About the role
We are looking for a tutor to teach philosophy, critical thinking and reading comprehension to two brothers, aged 10 and 11, homeschooled in Chicago. You will teach them together in one live online class each weekday, through stories, passages and thought experiments rather than lectures or essays.
What you'll do
- Teach one 60-minute class on Google Meet, Monday to Friday, with both brothers together.
- Open most classes with a short text, and build the boys’ reading comprehension through discussion: main idea, inference, the writer’s assumptions and evidence.
- Teach critical thinking skills: separating reasons from opinions, spotting weak arguments and judging everyday claims.
- Lead philosophical discussion on one big question at a time, using thought experiments, stories, videos and games.
- Design your own lessons and choose age-appropriate reading material.
- Keep the boys talking and reasoning for most of the class, and keep it light, warm and moving.
- Join every class on time, with your camera on.
- Share a short note with the team after each class on what the boys read and explored.
What we're looking for
- A degree with Philosophy as a major or core subject (BA Philosophy, BA Programme with Philosophy, MA or PhD), or completed training in Philosophy for Children (P4C).
